Richard left this earth on November 18th, 2025, and went to dog heaven to become Kennel Master. He was born in Bronwood, Georgia June 19th, 1933, to Roy and Essie Mae Smith. Richard joined the US Air Force in April of 1953 where he would retire after 23 years of service. He went to work for General Dynamics/Lockheed in Fort Worth, Texas, where he worked for 20 years until retiring in 1996.

Richard was an avid quail hunter and bird dog trainer/handler. He stayed remarkably busy after retirement, training gun dogs, guiding bird hunting trips and fishing. For several years he worked with the 4H Club Shooting Sports, leading many students to win state skeet and trap championships.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Teresa Smith and his Grandson Brian Widger. He is survived by his daughter Terrie Widger and husband Bob, daughter Karen Diedrich and husband Frank, son Aaron Smith and husband Paul, stepdaughter Sue Burns and husband Charles, stepdaughter Brenda Varga and husband Dave. Grandchildren Melissa Fellows, Sylvia Contreras, Christina Hager and several great-grandchildren.
